So, my winter is officially dedicated to Pokémon Violet. My husband has Scarlet, and we’re playing through at roughly the same pace.

Not gonna lie, there are SO MANY GLITCHES. At least they’re visual glitches, because I personally adore the game play. However, it is kind of distracting to have hills disappear as I’m rolling around the landscape. Although I appreciate the trainer battles now being optional, I’m so over being charged at by Rufflets and having the battle take longer than the XP points are worth.

Overall, I can’t wait to finish the storyline. I still have about a month left in the semester so I can’t spend ALL of my time on the game yet, but I cannot wait until finals are over!

I already made a whole blog post about my schedule on my professional blog, but I had some additional thoughts for here.

Overall, I’m pretty excited about classes starting again. I’m really hoping that being in upper level classes helps increase my motivation again. Since the last year has been primarily core requirements that have been super easy (I have a 4.0 for UNR), I have been wishing I could go back to adult world. I also miss the pay from full-time work, although I do not miss full-time work itself.

I am still glad that I was able to take these basic classes even though I had learned about 60-75% of the content just by working. I think that a lot of people, especially knowledge workers, could benefit from more business-focused classes as part of university requirements. Although I was able to figure a lot of this stuff out on my own, I would have had a greater head start the first time around if my science degree would have included some “here’s how the company you’ll inevitably work for should probably run.”

I also realized that I’ve been back in school full-time for a year now. Time is flying so fast. Both my nephew and niece are over a year old now, my nephew is walking and his cousin isn’t too far behind. I think watching the kids grow up is already my favorite way of noticing time moving on. I just hope that I get a “real” job when I graduate so I can get money pounding into savings accounts for when they’re ready to go out on their own. Although I don’t want to make my own little human, I still want to contribute to the futures of the littles in my life.

This semester is going to be so busy, my classes are all so late in the day. We’re actually probably going to get a meal plan for on-campus so that I can eat dinner with my husband a couple times a week. Although I’m excited for the content of my classes, I am not excited for my schedule and I’m worried about not having time for myself. I am so grateful that we were able to take time off work before the semester started at least.

Anyway, drop your tips for surviving a too-busy schedule below, I need all the help I can get.

So, I just finished my summer class website project – project301.cheyennekelly.com

I really had so much fun building it and getting into the CSS and messing around with it. I made a more detailed post on my professional blog here, but I just wanted to update this one as well.

Class was over Zoom today and there were only two of us who showed up to ask questions. The other person there asked about the project due today, got a couple answers and dipped. I asked one question about the project due today, but then asked more about the website. The professor helped me find my headings and I snapped a pic of the screen so I could find it and fix it later. I told him I was having fun with the CSS and he told me that there’s money in coding in any form, and recommended Python to me.

I started Automate the Boring Stuff last semester, but decided to put it on pause when I found out I’ll need to have a basis in C# for my Business Application classes in the fall. Out of the languages I’ve started learning, I think Python is my favorite just because it doesn’t end every line with a semicolon.

I did a tarot reading for myself on the last full moon, and the cards told me to keep doing what I’m good at. This website project just reminded me that I’m good at learning code and I just need to keep practicing.

We survived the weekend!

BBQ, Brews & Blues Festival Logo

We haven’t managed to come to this festival in a few years. This year, we had decided to buy tasting tickets so we could go around and get unlimited beer.

We showed up a little late on Friday night. Once we found the booth to get our wristbands and tasting cups, we got right on the tasting. We had at least heard of a lot of the breweries, but some were new to us. Overall, we avoided the Bud and Coors booths. However, we did stop at Great Basin Brewery’s tent for some Mystic Voyage, which I’ve had a few times from the local restaurant already. We powered through and hit a decent number of the booths in record time, got some BBQ, watched the band that was playing, and headed home for me to pass out on the couch before it was even dark out.

On Saturday, we had plans to go fishing super early with a buddy of ours. Luckily the early bedtime helped me out. Unluckily, the bugs were biting more than the fish, so we ended up calling it quits. We went to Old World Coffee and a farmer’s market in Carson City instead. We then headed home for a nap to prepare for round two of the B, B & B Festival.

We paced ourselves a little bit more for the second night, watched a bit more music, and enjoyed some Texas taters. We watched the Briefcase Blues Brothers, a Blues Brothers cover band (surprise!) and were a lot of fun. Later on, we got out our folding chairs to watch Jelly Bread, one of our favorite Reno local bands. We hadn’t had a chance to see them in a while, so they were a decent part of the reason we came to the festival.

Overall, I would call the weekend a success, although I’m still pooped coming into work today.

So, I survived!

My husband, Kyle, was very excited about it and bought the passes for both of us. I was not prepared for the 8 hour walk on Saturday.

Pokémon

My favorite shiny from the event was my Galarian Weezing, and I think it was one of the harder ones to get. I had almost gone home right before getting it from my incense. I’m also happy about the extra Trubbish, since I can trade it for the extra shiny Buizel that my husband caught. We also got enough Pidoves between the two of us to have complete shiny families with both male and female Unfezants.

In the screenshot below, the blue background ones are from yesterday (Sunday), everything before that was from Saturday except the Aron.

Overall, I am pleased with the experience. We both got duplicate shinies right off the bat (stupid Trapinch), but I didn’t get another one until the Tundra hour, a little over two hours in. The first city hour really kicked off the shinies for both of us, but the afternoon was more productive in general.

Kyle had made a whole spreadsheet beforehand with the lists of the shinies we needed so that way we could focus our efforts. We did both catch a few of the regionals (Tropius and Torkoal), but overall we didn’t tap on anything that didn’t have a shiny that we didn’t already have. When Kyle was checking the Reddit after the fact on Saturday, we seemed to be on the higher end of the shiny count, which had happened for us for GoFest 2021 as well.

Not gonna lie, Shaymin is just the cutest too. I loved the catch screen, I wish I would have taken a screenshot. The last few events that gave you a special catch (like Mew and Celebi) tended to force you to use the AR mode to catch the Pokémon. Instead, Shaymin walked into a beautiful painted background for the catch.

Although we didn’t get any shinies from the free raid passes on Sunday, getting the extra incense and wild shinies was still worth it.

Even though I complained about my feet more than I should have, I ended up having a good time. Next year, I plan to train a little more beforehand!

Comment with your experience and how many shinies you got!

Uhhhhhhgggghhh. I’m in school for my second bachelor’s and I just found out I have to fill out a form every semester that reminds them that I’m actively working towards finishing my degree, because I “have too many credits.”

I’m wondering if colleges got in trouble for letting people go to school too long and wracking up massive student loans or something. Otherwise, this process is just generating paperwork for no reason other than to keep some poor office worker busy.

I’ve been thinking about work and how so much office work could be done by an automated program at this point. So many companies are paying people just to move paperwork from one pile to another, with too much other paperwork relying on that first piece making it to the right pile. I know there’s a portion of it that is probably required by some government office somewhere along the line, but I think there’s a decent chance that was just done for busy work for someone else too.

Not going to lie, part of the reason I went back to school was so I could take the time to learn how to automate all of my past jobs into obliteration.

Although I love my job right now, I still feel financially behind and I’m thinking I want to start taking temporary, part-time admin jobs once the new hires start in around the end of June. I can get about 1.5 – 2x the hourly rate, but I won’t get the chance to do homework while at work. Temp work is ideal for me as well, because I’ll be able to see a bunch of workplaces and situations that will help me understand what is needed for the kind of software I want to make. I want to take my job duties beyond overly complicated spreadsheets.

Lol, the SEO program I use hates the way I write.

I rode my bike home from work today and my path takes me past a local boba tea place. I really wanted boba tea, but I really didn’t want to pay $8 for it (like I may or may not have done last week…), so here’s the version I made at home and was quite pleased with.

First off, assemble your ingredients

  • 5 minute boba pearls (I have black sugar flavor here, but they’re very mild in flavor)
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Pre-made strawberry lemonade (I got this brand at Costco)
  • Ice (optional if your lemonade is already cold)
  • Mint leaves (also optional, more for smell than flavor)
  • Pint glass and boba straw

Next, prepare your boba. The brand I have came from a local Asian mart, and the instructions have you boil the boba for two to three minutes, then turn off the burner and allow to sit for another two to three minutes. I like mine chewy, so I did a total of 5 minutes, but you can go longer if you like it softer.

While the boba is boiling, cut up two-ish strawberries in small enough chunks to fit up your boba straw. Eat the extra strawberries you got out.

Picture of layered glass and mint leaves

Once your boba has finished boiling and is cooled down, put the strawberries and boba into your glass. Top with ice (I definitely used too much). Go pick your mint leaves and rinse them off, then crunch them up a little with your hands and put them on top of the ice.

Finished Strawberry Lemonade Boba Drink

Finally, pour your lemonade over the ice and mix with your boba straw. Enjoy your homemade delicious boba drink! I love making these at home because I can put more of the toppings I want and top off with more of the drink part if I need to.

What’s your favorite boba tea flavor?

This is going to be the blog where I talk about my life and the stuff I like.

Heads up, I’m a millennial.

Right now, in the early summer of 2022, I’m really into disc golf, riding my bike, and learning about anarchy and communism.

However, I’m always subject to change and will probably be into something else by next month, if not next week.

Other things I’m into:

  • My husband, Kyle
  • Working on my Information Systems degree
  • Tarot
  • Magic the Gathering (I’m really bad at it)
  • Sewing, crochet, knitting
  • Fidget toys
  • Reading
  • Pokémon Go

Ultimately, this blog is intended to be a record of who I am and what I’m learning and doing with my life. This is my space and I’m not going to go hardcore with the SEO on it. Depending on how it goes, I might even stick a password on it or parts of this blog.

At this moment, this is a place for me to shout into the void, and I’m alright with that.

Leave me a comment if you want!
